Why is there a misconception that Buddha was oriental?
Some people are surprised learn that Buddhism originated in ancient India. They assume that Buddha was Chinese or some oriental race. What factors do you think shape our perceptions?
i used to think that too until i learned about world religions in the world. even though it orignated in india, its strongest base right now is in the East. more people there are buddhist than in india. Buddhism was wiped out of its homeland (india) with when muslim (turks or mongols, not sure) migrated into india. they raided the buddhist temples and thus erradicated it from india. people think that where a religion originated would probably be in the most prominent place. thus since it is most popular in the east, they think it originated there. howver they did not realize that it may have been eradicated from its homeland

There was a need for non-attachment, to be sure; but also a prerequisite of knife-like resolve. Here in this exotic land, we were compelled to raise the art of shopping to an experience that was, on the other hand, tinged with desperation, like shopping at Macy’s during a one-day-only White Sale.Shopping for Buddhas is Jeff Greenwald’s story of his obsessive search for the perfect Buddha statue. The art of the Northern kingdoms of Thailand was Buddhist, and the Buddha image was at its core. The purpose of traditional Buddhist art was not to delight the eye or “decorate,” but to remind, enlighten, and instruct. For many years art historians considered the sculpture of Northern Thailand, or Lan Na, to be a minor tradition. This volume shows that Lan Na sculpture is an enormous body of work …

Anybody seen the Dalai Lama speak?
A friend of mine is inviting me to an event happening in NYC – apparently the Dalai Lama is coming to speak about the Diamon Sutra for a few weekends.
Having never been to an event like this – i was just wondering if anyone on Yahoo answers has ever been err.. “in class” with the Dalai Lama so to speak. And if so, would you suggest the experience?
Yargh…do i have to put the Caveats on this question too? :sigh:
yes, and i would recommend it.
he tends to target his speeches to the audience at hand. when he speaks to the general public, he is much more general about life. when he gives specific teachings, like a talk on the diamond sutra, he can go into great depth. he’s one of those teachers that gives you the impression that he is talking directly to you.
