Where to find Buddhist supplies in NYC?

I would like to create a Tibetan Buddhist meditation room. Does anyone know of any great stores for supplies such as prayer wheels, buddha statues, carpets, meditation pillows, etc. in Manhattan?

Good evening, Zebra.

While I’ve never been at their store personally, I’ve made some purchases through their website ( http://www.sharchen.com/ ) and over the phone. The owners have been most helpful in recommending various ritual items to me and I trust their judgment. They tell me their on-line catalog has significantly fewer items than their store. It may be worth the time for you to visit them (their location’s address is on their website). Hope this helps.

May all be at peace.

John

Amida Buddha

amida buddha

His long and complex history has made the extraordinarily diverse Buddhist tradition.

Buddhism is commonly known for its austere tradition of self-sufficiency found on the first Buddhist monastic community. Trust only yourself to achieve nirvana experience that the Buddha himself attained. An example of this is practice Theravada Buddhist monastery in South East Asia, especially Sri Lanka, where the center of Buddhist activity is largely in the monastery by a group of yellow-robed monks. Leave in the morning in a very austere and simple with his balls of begging walk from house to house, spreading his balls, taking off the lead, and invite members of the community by providing aid to sustain them for that day.

One of the classic rules of traditional Buddhism, the monks can not take food from one day to another. Each morning, the monks have to leave their clothes, with his balls to ask for food. That simple austere tradition is a tradition actually grows directly from the experience of Buddha, from the early stages of growth of the Buddhist tradition.

To find the same kind of self-confidence Zen tradition in Japan. He was visiting Japan for a couple of weeks as part of a conference when I went to Kyoto, the great imperial capital of Japan, and visited a Zen master, who was the head of one of the monasteries in one of the monastic compound, a monastery called Daitoku-ji. I was talking to him and take pictures. By focusing the camera on him, told him how important it was to be for my students to be able to show an image of a Zen master, who was clearly the progress, and clearly reflected in a powerful way of that tradition. I looked into her eyes and said: "I want to tell you when you talk to them about this tradition: be brave, stand up back straight and rely on themselves. "Like many people in my business have a bit of a stairway scholars, I found myself standing a little straighter.

There is also another important aspect of the tradition that insists that it is not possible, and perhaps not even desirable, to achieve salvation only in its own right, simply rely on their own power. But instead of relying on the power of a deity, a figure that is infinitely greater than you.

An example of this we to study in more detail in other articles is the worship of the Buddha Amida and Pure Land Buddhists in Japan. Pure Land Buddhism has come to North America as many other varieties of Buddhism, in some of its manifestations in this country, in particular, which often looks a lot like Christian devotion.

I was visiting not long ago one of the temples of the Pure Land in Hawaii and the curious scholar myself, I opened a little on the back of the church hymn book at him. There were words that seemed eerily familiar to me. It began: "Buddha loves me, this I know from the Sutras tell me."

Another example Buddhist devotion with which we occupy some of our attention is devoted to Chinese Buddhist Bodhisattva or future Buddha, a Buddha does not say, but a deity who will become a Buddha in a future life. The Bodhisattva Guan Yin.

Guan Yin is often depicted as a beautiful woman standing figure with a baby. Civilization in China, Guan Yin is considered the emodiment of compassion, but compassion particularly associated with the development of a healthy and happy family and the gift of children.

When I was visiting a Chinese Buddhist pilgrimage site in Shanghai, I met a group of Chinese Buddhists, Buddhist ethnic Chinese who arrived from the Philippines and Indonesia. I asked him why he had made the long and hard place, and expensive trip to pay homage to the deity Guan Yin, and they told me was the wealth of his family, and in particular the hope of having children.

This is an aspect of Buddhism that many people may seem unfamiliar, but also deeply rooted in practice india tradition and we have to take some of our attention on Tibet. One of the most important aspects of religious devotion is not necessarily focused on the great figures of heaven, but human beings who embody power. The Dalai Lama, in particular, is one of them. People think of the Lama Lama sometimes as a living Buddha, who is not technically correct, is a vivid manifestation of the bodhisattva of compassion which manifests itself as Guan Yin in China. But he also has an extraordinary ability to make the power of compassion for the people present. I'll take a few articles on the big picture of the Dalai Lama.

Devotion is an important aspect Buddhist tradition, not just rely on yourself, but in a sense of openness to yourself the power that comes from a much higher figure than you.
