Children are drawn to animals like moths to a flame. Kids and pets are so good for each other. It’s sad when a child is afraid of dogs. Both are missing out.

The best way to get over that quickly is to teach your child how to approach a dog – and when not to. There are many opportunities at parks and around the neighborhood. The first time to two, you should walk through these steps first to show your child how it’s done. When they’re comfortable with the process, they can do it while you watch.

When you see a dog that you’d like to meet, first you should ask its owner if it’s okay to pet the dog. Of course it’s common courtesy, but it’s also the best way to find out if the dog is going to be friendly to a child. If the person says that the dog is not child friendly, explain to your child that the dog is afraid of kids.

If the person says yes, then it’s time to ask the dog. But dogs don’t speak English, so you have to ask and listen for the answer in body language. Put your hand about 6 inches away from the dog’s nose, with the back of your hand to the dog. This way the dog understands that you’re not reaching for him without his permission. Dogs like to get to know somebody by smelling them. The dog will probably sniff at your hand. This is like a person looking at someone to see who they are. Now you should listen for the dog’s answer.

Look at his tail. If his tail is out and wagging, then he’s happy and relaxed. If it’s down between his legs, he’s scared. Is the dog leaning toward you or away from you? That could be a sign of whether he’s interested in contact or afraid of it.

If the dog seems happy and relaxed, then turn your hand around so the palm is facing the dog. If he still seems relaxed, then move your hand slowly toward the top of his head. If at any time he backs away, you’re moving too fast.

Most dogs will be friendly and even eager to be pet by a child. It’s good for your child to walk away from a few dogs who aren’t, though. They need to learn that a dog has a right not to be touched by strangers. This, of course, supports the idea that children also have the right not to be touched by strangers. Also, one of the most valuable things children can learn from pets is how to be kind to someone smaller or weaker than them. Help them feel empathy for the dog by explaining that the dog is scared of them. The kind thing to do in such a situation is to walk away let the dog get back to his walk.

Along the way, kids will get to know lots of friendly dogs and enjoy their interactions.
